Construction & Rehabilitation of Schools & WASH Facilities
An ongoing exercise to assist children in rural areas to get better educational and WASH facilities in Zimbabwe (A Case of Makoni District)
Access to safe water and sanitation remains a major issue, particularly in rural areas. Access to adequate improved sanitation lags significantly behind at 35 percent.
Providing a conducive learning environment for children in Zimbabwe regardless of their parents poor socio-economic status, is one of the key pillars of Unlimited Hope Alliance (UHA).
We are helping rural schools build classrooms, one block at a time, and WASH facilities that have either been dilapidated or destroyed by natural disasters, Thus making Lives Better for everyone, especially women and girls
A case study that we are currently working on is a primary school in Makoni District, Rusape, Zimbabwe. The toilet there were destroyed by cyclone Eloise on 23 January 2021. What remained was pit with rubble as the toilet collapsed due to strong winds and heavy rains as illustrated in the pictures on this page. The school has a total enrolment of 917 pupils (439 boys and 478 girls).
At this school we are assisting in the construction of a new block and the rehabilitation of the existing WASH structures. We are also playing a pivotal role in the construction of ‘girl and disability’ toilets plus a hand-wash facility.
UHA is currently working with stakeholders who would like to support this project as we seek to address similar challenges faced with other schools in the region.
